Back in January of 2022, Robert Dorman released a video on Art Carts. He asked the question "What would a book look like on a Game Boy". I was inspired by this thought and the end result is this - "The Ungrateful Son" by the Brothers Grimm, adapted for the Game Boy.

The Game Boy itself has a form factor similar to a small book, and I was interested in seeing how I could present long strings of text in a way that wasn't difficult to comprehend. I was drawn to the Brother's Grimm fairy tales when deciding what to create. The stories are reasonably short which suits the handheld and they allow for illustrations which serve to break up the text and offer a moment to rest between reading. They also contain themes and imagery that will excite children while still engaging adults. This was important to me because the Game Boy is a console that has been enjoyed by all ages since its release and I felt it's important to make sure the story caters to that same wide demographic.

The story is intended for use with the Game Boy (download the ROM below and flash to a cart or similar) or the Analogue Pocket (.pocket file available to download below).

I hope you enjoy The Ungrateful Son,
- Tom (Gumpy Function)

I love the glass on the table, what a great image using the GB limitations but being able to produce light refraction in a fine art way!

Thanks, I enjoy painting still life with oils and translating that idea to pixel art was a challenge I found to be quite fun (and relaxing too)!

such and awesome concept and beautiful art!

Thanks bud, appreciate the kind words.

Very nice. I will include it in my Art cart.

Nice one! Glad you enjoyed, bud.

Yeah, I think this is a success! You did good!

Thank you so much!

Nice work! I've thought about this, more in terms of a comic book, but it never seemed to translate as cleanly as this. You've given me food for thought.

Thanks! Comic book would be interesting. Speech bubbles would be tough though.
