LBaP! v1.1 Update (Free Version)

In the last update, I released a GB Studio engine.json Guide. This guide aimed to help GB Studio users on their journey into the mysterious realm of C programming and custom plugin creation. As this guide is applicable to all GB Studio users and not just those looking to make a platformer game, I have decided it's best to remove the paywall and instead include it in the free version of the Let's Build a Platformer! course for the benefit of the wider community.

You can now find the GB Studio engine.json Guide.pdf within the root directory of the free version. For a more detailed breakdown of what the guide includes, you can read the previous devlog here.

And while I'm here, I'd like to share some future plans I have for the LBaP! course.

A Platformer Game Migration Guide Ready For The Next GB Studio Update

If you're not yet aware, the develop branch of GB Studio has just been updated to include an expanded platformer engine - based on Hauntology's own Platformer+ plugin. I've been working with the GB Studio dev team these last few months, helping to expand on its features even further and while there are still many similarities between the Platformer+ plugin and the updated default platformer engine, projects using GB Studio 4.1.3 and Hauntology's P+ plugin will not be directly compatible.

This includes the LBaP! project file, obviously. To help anyone currently making a platformer game using GBS 4.1.3 and wishing to migrate their own project to the next version of GB Studio, I have begun the process of migrating the LBaP! project and developing a detailed migration guide. This migration guide will be included as a bonus Lesson 6.5 and packaged with the free version of the course.

A Detailed GB Studio Debug Guide

I covered debugging your game in some detail in the full version of the course, but as it's all confined to comments within the project file, I felt this topic would be better suited as its own PDF guide much like the GB Studio engine.json Guide is structured. As such, I will be revisiting this topic and expanding on how to use GB Studio's debugger in greater detail. As this topic is also applicable to the wider community, I plan on releasing this guide for free as well.

So, that's it for now. I hope you find some value in my new (and now free!) GB Studio engine.json Guide!

Happy coding,

- Tom (Gumpy Function)
